Welcome to the Sixth Form at John Smeaton Academy. We are delighted that you are considering coming to us for this next vital stage of your education. Our aim is to provide the challenge, guidance and support to enable you to make the transition from school to higher education, training or employment – to be able to make your own way in the world.
John Smeaton Sixth Form is a place where you can grow and develop, both as a learner and as a person, in a friendly and supportive environment.
Academic achievement is top priority. Including your timetabled lessons and study periods, A-Level and BTEC courses require a commitment of a minimum of 40 hours learning time per week and maximum attendance. The time in Sixth Form passes quickly, so you will have to be organised in order to meet deadlines and keep up-to-date; the planner will help you to stay on top of things.
John Smeaton Sixth Form is a place of opportunity, in the classroom and beyond. We want you to grasp every opportunity; it is by being involved that you will learn new skills and develop yourself as a person. Employers and universities are looking for motivated and well-rounded people, and it is a good idea to use your planner to record evidence of what you have done to develop as a person.
The Post 16 Team welcomes all applications from current Year 11 students at John Smeaton Academy, as well as those that have been educated at another institution. Key to selection and entry into post 16 provision at John Smeaton Academy is conditional on all applicants fulfilling the specified academic entry criteria for individual courses. This can be found in the online prospectus.
All prospective students are asked to apply directly to the academy by completing the online application form that can be found on the website.
Once applications are sent, students will receive an acknowledgement that their application is being considered and an invitation to come in and talk to a member of the sixth form team to discuss your options. Finally, a conditional offer based on your performance at GCSE to undertake level 3 study.
