In 2019 pupils and staff from The Ruth Gorse Academy went on an expedition to Trinidad to study leaf cutter ants in their natural habitat, after establishing the world’s only leaf cutter ant colony within a school.

Formed from this expedition was The Trinidad Legacy which aims to establish an understanding of the environment, climate change and our impact on the world amongst the trust’s pupils and professionals.

John Smeaton Academy pupils will now have the opportunity to participate in an environmental project connected to The Trinidad Legacy. Pupils will also be given the opportunity to join further trips to Trinidad and other parts of the world with a focus on climate change.
