Gatsby Benchmark

Gatsby Benchmarks

The Gatsby Benchmarks are a government endorsed framework of eight guidelines designed to raise the standard of careers education and guidance across the UK.  Many schools across the UK, including John Smeaton Academy,  are following the guideline to ensure that their school’s careers education, advice and guidance programme meets the needs of all their students and provides a well-rounded careers education that will help them to achieve their full potential in the world of work

Our whole careers programme has been planned around achieving the eight benchmarks, for example, increasing our pupils access to employers and embedding careers education across the curriculum.  Our appointment of Sarah Humphrey will help us to continue to achieve benchmark 8 which is about providing independent careers advice.

The 8 Benchmarks are as follows:

1  A stable careers programme

2  Learning from labour market information

3  Addressing the need of every pupil

4  Linking curriculum learning to careers

5 Encounters with employers and employees

6  Experience of workplaces

7  Encounters with further and higher education

8  Personal Guidance

A summary of what schools should be putting in place to achieve the benchmarks can be found here: https://www.careersandenterprise.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploaded/what_good_looks_like_-_across_all_gatsby_benchmarks.pdf
