Complex Learning Difficulties Provision

John Smeaton Academy has a Resourced Provision for students with Complex Learning Difficulties. Students in the RP all have an EHC Plan and JSA Resourced Provision is named on the plan. Students accessing the Resourced Provision have a primary need of Cognition and Learning and/or Communication and Interaction difficulties. ‘The Leeds Local Authority directs on the number of places available in the Resourced Provision and this currently stands at 15 student places.’

The ratio of staff to students in the Resourced Provision is much higher than that required in the mainstream setting, with students accessing adult support on a 1:1/very small group basis. Students within the Resourced Provision access a bespoke curriculum of small group and individual targeted learning.

‘Specialist programmes include: literacy (including Read, Write Inc, Fresh Start, Lexia and Bedrock), numeracy, speech, language & communication (including support from our traded NHS Speech and Language Therapist), life skills (including food preparation*), sensory intervention and sport and leisure (including swimming*) and enrichment programmes. These are all key features of the provision and are timetabled to compliment a diet of mainstream curriculum lessons with a high level of adult support alongside Quality First Teaching.

*Currently on hold owing to COVID 19 restrictions.

Students within the RP are allocated a key-worker to support their learning and pastoral care. The SENCo ensures that Annual Reviews of EHC Plans are held and all stakeholders are invited as well as maintaining very close home-school liaison throughout the academic year. Where appropriate, the SENCo will refer to outside agencies in consultation with parents/carers. The team of SEND Teaching Assistants who work directly with the students in the provision are available daily, as are the SEND Teachers and SENCo to provide advice and support to teaching staff and an ongoing CPD programme is in place.

‘Key Stage 4 students undertake a bespoke curriculum diet including qualifications selected from the following accredited courses:

  • GCSE English, maths and options subjects
  • Step-Up to English
  • Functional Maths
  • AQA Units.
