Teaching and Learning
Teaching and Learning at John Smeaton Academy is underpinned by evidence-based pedagogy. Learning takes place when there is a change in long-term memory. In order to achieve this, all lessons are carefully sequenced and are designed to develop powerful knowledge and skills overtime. Lessons are planned using Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction and focus on the following key areas:
- Climate for Learning
- Inclusive Teaching
- Direct Instruction
- Assessment for Learning
- Independent Practice
- Feedback and DIRT (Dedicated Improvement and Reflection Time)
Our aim is to ensure consistently excellent teaching, supported by high expectations, to secure the progress of all students.
The Professional Learning Programme (PLP)
As professionals at John Smeaton Academy, we are deeply committed to our own professional learning and development. Our Professional Learning Programme (PLP) is underpinned by research into the most effective methods of professional development and is based on a collegiate approach- we are all responsible for actively participating in the Programme and supporting each other to develop further.
For teaching staff, the Professional Learning Programme focuses on whole-school priorities linked to developing excellent teaching and learning. In addition to this, each department within school meets weekly to discuss subject specific knowledge. Teaching staff also undertake bespoke Professional Learning, which is directly linked to personal development and career aspirations. The Programme also develops our team of Support Staff, through a clear focus on CPD and career aspirations.
