SLT News: Speaker of the House of Commons

JSA Pupils Enter the World of Politics!

Last Friday, three prominent members of the John Smeaton Academy Debate Club, Mohammed Ismail, Kyra D and Oscar H, were selected to attend a debating session with the Speaker of the House of Commons, RT Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle, at the Howard Opera Centre, Leeds. Our students joined 80 other secondary school pupils from across Leeds and had the opportunity to learn more about the role of the Speaker of the House of Commons, ask questions and take part in a debate chaired by the Speaker. The debate issue was ‘should all exams be scrapped?’ The pupils were enthralled with the range of insightful opinions about both the pros and cons of examinations in modern day society.

As part of the Q&A session with RT Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Mohammed Ismail posed a very insightful question to the Speaker: ‘how do you remain impartial during debates in the Commons chamber?’ The Speaker shared his thoughts about the importance of remaining impartial but also appreciated that this can be challenging within his role depending on the issue being debated.

At John Smeaton Academy, we pride ourselves on investing in each individual child. Therefore, we are delighted to have secured this opportunity for our students as we fully understand the difference experiences like this can make to the ambitions and aspirations of our young people.
